This May, in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, the Chicago area will host the 4th Annual AAPI Restaurants Week from May 16 to 25, 2025. Organized by OCA Greater Chicago, this event highlights over 55 AANHPI-owned restaurants across the city and suburbs, offering a diverse array of cuisines and dining experiences.
A Culinary Celebration of Culture and Community
AAPI Restaurants Week is more than a gastronomic event; it's a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry that AANHPI communities contribute to the Chicagoland area. The participating establishments range from traditional eateries to modern fusion spots, reflecting the multifaceted identities and histories of their owners. Notably, the event encourages participation from all AANHPI-owned restaurants, regardless of the cuisine they serve, emphasizing the diversity within these communities.
Spotlight on Participating Restaurants
Among the featured participants is Sunda New Asian in River North and Fulton Market, offering a special menu that includes dishes like Baked Oysters with coconut braised collard greens and a Kamayan Feast—a communal Filipino dining experience.
Another notable venue is AO Hawaiian Hideout in the South Loop, which brings the spirit of the islands to Chicago with its tropical ambiance and Hawaiian-inspired dishes. The restaurant is co-owned by a husband-and-wife team dedicated to honoring their heritage through food.
Supporting Local Businesses
The initiative aims to bolster AANHPI-owned businesses, many of which faced significant challenges during the pandemic. By dining at these establishments, patrons not only enjoy unique culinary experiences but also contribute to the resilience and growth of these communities.
